Degrees: Vary by chosen academic discipline

Special programs:  Medical Scholars Program

Saint Louis University is among a select few universities that maintain a full-time office devoted to the advising and counseling needs of pre-professional health students. Program staff advises students who are interested in attending professional schools with programs in medicine, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, and veterinary.  Numerous programs and services are offered to students, including special courses, internships, advising and recommendation letters through the Pre-Health Committee on Evaluations.

Students complete the premedical curriculum and a major in an academic discipline of their choice. Many students choose non-science disciplines such as philosophy, literature, or psychology. The premedical curriculum represents the entrance requirements set by medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, and veterinary schools. Where entrance requirements exceed the curriculum, students are advised accordingly.

Careers in the Field:

Students from this program have been accepted at dental, optometry, podiatry, and veterinary schools. Records for placement in medical schools have been significantly above the national average. Conservatively, more than 60 percent of participating  students are accepted into medical school on first application. When also considering those who re-apply later, 75 to 85 percent of a typical class will enter medical school.

Internship Opportunities:

Pre-professional health students engaging in internships may choose from the many hospitals in the St. Louis area, including Saint Louis University Hospital, Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, and St. Anthony's Hospital. Internships usually include work in emergency rooms, on observation wards, or in operating rooms. Pre-dental students may complete an internship at SLU's Center for Advanced Dental Education.

Pre-medical students eligible for college work-study are encouraged to seek positions at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. The Office of Pre-Professional Health Studies can often help students locate such positions.

Higher purpose. Greater good.
