Overview: The B.A. and B.S. degrees in Biochemistry are offered through the Department of Chemistry. The B.A. program, designed for students interested in applications of chemistry to the life sciences, prepares students for professional schools, such as medicine, dentistry, law and pharmacy. The B.S. program, designed for students interested in applications of chemistry to the life sciences, provides excellent preparation for students interested in working in biochemistry, molecular biology or biotechnology.
Program Attributes: The Department of Chemistry, the home of the undergraduate biochemistry program, places a great emphasis on undergraduate research. Thus, B.A. and B.S. majors have ample opportunity to pursue research projects under the close mentorship of a full-time faculty member either in Chemistry or in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Students use a variety of specialized equipment and computers in their laboratories and in their research, and those in upper-level biochemistry courses enjoy small classes and personalized attention.
The Department of Chemistry has an active Chemistry Club and hosts several social events throughout the year.
Careers in the Field: Students who are interested in careers in biochemistry, biotechnology or life sciences fields, who want to pursue graduate careers in biochemistry or are interested in an excellent preparation for professional school (medical, dental, law, etc.), will find a degree in biochemistry to be excellent preparation.
Internships and Opportunities: Selected undergraduate students can apply to work with faculty in undergraduate laboratories as laboratory assistants. Lab assistants receive a stipend.
