SLU Karate Club is an organization designed to allow students with a mutual interest in the Martial Arts to gather together and learn the art of Tang Soo Do. The aims of the club are simple: "we wish to promote not only the learning of Karate, but to increase student relationships through the spirit of competition and good sportsmanship".
SLU Karate was formed in 1991 by Matt Warshauer. He originally learned Tang Soo Do while attending Central Connecticut State University as an undergraduate and has since returned to that location. His instructors were seventh degree Master Harry Needham and fifth degree Master Frank Capodicasa. Currently, the club is instructed by Master Chris Beardsley and Master Jamie Mize, both fourth degree black belts. Assistant instructors include: Dan Kuchan, David Cormier, and Leila Thampy.
No experience required to join. We also welcome those with martial arts experience in other styles to join us. There is no obligation to pay dues until the three weeks after the start date, so you can try the club for a few classes freely.
When the spring semester begins, Karate will be practicing on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:30pm- 9:00pm in Multipurpose Room 1 & 2 (lower level) of the Simon Recreation Center.
