SLUCare's electronic health record (EHR) initiative revolutionizes the way health care information is managed. EHR improves the quality and safety of patient care, resulting in better health outcomes and greater patient satisfaction including: efficiency of patient care, health professional education, clinical research and regulatory compliance within SLUCare.
By 2014, all major healthcare providers are required to adopt an EHR to participate in Medicare. An EHR is the digital version of a paper medical chart but has distinct advantages. This system permits improved access to important clinical information, direction entry of the data by physicians and clinical staff and clinical decision support tools at the point of care.
All SLUCare practitioners will be required to use the EHR at SLUCare facilities as the paper medical record is phased out and the EpicCare system is fully implemented. To assist in the transition from paper to electronic health records, a combination of instructor-led and e-learning courses are required for SLUCare physician, clinical staff, medical students, residents and other health professional trainees of the University and/or its affiliated institutions.
