Visiting the Vatican Film Library

The Vatican Film Library is open to all members of the Saint Louis University community. All non-SLU affiliates should contact us before arriving to make an appointment. All visitors are required to present a photo ID upon entering the University Library and to sign the VFL’s visitor log on a daily basis.

Conditions for Use

All visitors are expected to abide by the following conditions for use of the reading room and materials:

  • No food or drink (including bottled water) is allowed.
  • All materials must remain in the reading room. Reference materials may be removed only with the permission of library personnel.

Additional requirements when consulting or participating in instructional sessions using medieval manuscripts or limited edition manuscript facsimiles:

  • Hands must be clean (hand sanitizer is not acceptable).
  • Materials must be handled with care.
  • Coats, bags, and umbrellas must be stored separately from materials. Only a notebook, computer, camera or cell phone (no flash or additional lighting) are permitted.
  •  Pencils only may be used. No pens or ink may be used near the materials.
  • Book supports provided must be used. Make no marks on the materials. Do not lean on materials or rest other objects on them.
  • If a reproduction is required, consult library personnel.
  • When finished with materials, inform library personnel.

Reproductions

Copies of manuscripts and other materials in microfilm, microfiche, or digital format may be made by researchers themselves on-site only for purposes of personal private study, scholarship, or research within the limitations of fair use (title 17, sec. 107, US Code).

Requests from a distance for reproduction of materials in microfilm, microfiche, or digital format as well as permissions to publish, must be directed to the libraries or archives that hold the original materials. See:
