What do we Christians feel when we reflect on the truth that Jesus has risen to a new life? I believe that first and foremost we feel gratitude to God. Through the resurrection of Jesus, we see that God has kept his promise to his Son and to us. Now we know that we can call God Abba, "Father," with absolute confidence, just as Jesus did.
And we see that God truly is a friend of life. We see it when we look at Jesus, who had a passion for a life lived out fully, sanely and justly. We understand why Jesus put restoring the health of the sick and the outcast over the suffocating religious traditions and norms of his time.
We know that God identifies himself not with the crucifiers but with the crucified. Jesus lived among the poor, the sick and the hungry, not among the Pharisees and masters of the Law. And, like Jesus, we too are called to carry on in His name, to defend all those who are mistreated by the world around them; the poor, the immigrant, the sick.
Easter, then, is the time to follow Jesus' invitation to convert our hearts; it is a time to closely follow Him; it is a time to be His presence in our world.
