First Annual Health Care Ethics Research Conference a Great Success!

Health Care Ethics Research ConferenceThe Center for Health Care Ethics hosted the First Annual Health Care Ethics Research Conference on March 21, 2014. The conference, designed to foster advanced academic discourse in fields related to health care ethics, allowed both undergraduate and graduate students to present research related to health care ethics to an interdisciplinary audience of about 80 participants. The event featured and affirmed research by health care ethics students, and helped to increase awareness of ethical issues in science and medicine to the university and wider community.

The keynote speech, “Patients: The Neglected Source for Medical Ethics,” was delivered by this year's Drummond Distinguished Lecturer, Larry R. Churchill, PhD (Ann Geddes Stahlman Professor of Medical Ethics, Vanderbilt University). The talk explored the significance of certain aspects of patient/provider communication and relationships to clinical outcomes in medicine. Following the keynote address, 12 students presented original research in three afternoon sessions. Winning first place in the General Graduate Student category was Rachelle Barina, PhD(c), with Bradley Thornock, PhD(c) as the runner up. Winning first place in the Graduate Student-Theology category was Alyson Isaksson, with Emily Trancik, PhD (c) as the runner up. Ms. Gabrielle Broders won the Undergraduate, Non-Senior category and Ms. Shelly Gulhar won the Undergraduate-Senior category. Ms. Gulhar will go on to present at SLU's Senior Legacy Symposium in April, representing the Health Care Ethics minor. The conference concluded with an afternoon reception.

The Second Annual Health Care Ethics Research Conference will be held next Spring. Please check the website periodically for updates and information on abstract submissions and conference registration.
