Bander Center For Medical Professionalism

The Dr. Steven J. Bander Center for Medical Professionalism was endowed by a $3 million donation from Dr. Bander, a nephrologist at Saint Louis University. The Center is devoted specifically to providing training opportunities for medical students, residents, and medical faculty in the areas of professionalism and business ethics in medicine.

Beginning in 2008, the Bander Center will support a Fellowship program for new faculty in the School of Medicine. Center faculty have also introduced new case discussions into the ethics unit of the medical student course, Patient, Physician, and Society I, and an endowed lecture will be delivered each year within the Department of Internal Medicine’s Grand Rounds. A Bander Center website is currently under construction, which will provide access to numerous resource in medical professionalism and CME opportunities.

As a first service task, the Center Director, James DuBois, and the Coordinator, Jeff Dueker, are serving on a task force for the School of Medicine charged with discussing the interactions between SLU physicians, residents and students with the pharmaceutical and other medical industries. The task force is expected to offer recommendations by the end of the year.

A Bander Center Inauguration is being planned for April 8th, 2008, in the LRC Lecture Halls of the medical school. The program will feature an endowed lecture by Dr. Matthew Wynia, Director of the Institute of Ethics at the American Medical Association and and update on the Center’s activities and plans. A reception will follow. Further details will be distributed in the first Bander Center newsletter, which will be sent in December 2007.

For more information about the Bander Center, please contact Jeff Dueker, the Center Coordinator, at or (314) 977-6667.
