Bernard Lo, MD to Deliver
Bander Center Distinguished Lecture

Bernard LoBernard Lo, MD will present the 2011 Bander Endowed Lecture, "Partnerships Between Academic Health Centers and Industry: Opportunities, Challenges, and Pitfalls" as part of the Department of Internal Medicine's Grand Rounds. Dr. Lo is Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Medical Ethics Program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Lo chaired the 2009 Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee that produced the report, "Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice." He is also the author of "Resolving Ethical Dilemmas: A Guide for Clinicians" (4th ed., 2010) and of "Ethical Issues in Clinical Research" (2010). The lecture takes place Friday, November 4 at 7:30am in the Learning Resource Center on the SLU Medical Campus. Bander Endowed Lectures are approved for 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 creditTM. All are welcome to attend!


New Book by Dr. Jeffrey P. Bishop

Anticipatory Corpse Jeffrey Bishop, MD, PhDNotre Dame Press has published The Anticipatory Corpse: Medicine, Power, and the Care of the Dying, a new book by Dr. Jeffrey P. Bishop. In this original and compelling book, Dr. Bishop argues that something has gone sadly amiss in the care of the dying by contemporary medicine and in our social and political views of death, as shaped by our scientific successes and ongoing debates about euthanasia and the "right to die"-or to live.

Faculty Spotlight: Erica K. Salter

Erica Salter, PhDThe Center for Health Care Ethics welcomed Erica K. Salter, PhD to the faculty this year. Dr. Salter is Instructor and Director of Undergraduate Education in Health Care Ethics. She oversees the PhD clinical practicum and teaches clinical ethics to PhD and nursing students. She has a degree in philosophy and cognitive science from Rice University, and completed her PhD in Health Care Ethics at St. Louis University in 2011.
