This year's Drummond Lecture in Health Care Ethics was a success despite a major setback—our scheduled speaker, Dr. Edmund Pellegrino, had to cancel due to illness. Sandra Johnson, JD, LLM, Emerita Professor of Law and Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University filled in at the last minute and gave a memorable presentation entitled, “Good Medicine, Bad Law (and vice versa): The Challenge in Physicians' Complaints about Law's Effect on Practice.”

Student News
Tyler Gibb, a student in the JD/PhD dual degree program, was recently chosen to serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Saint Louis University Law School’s Journal of Health Law & Policy for the 2009-2010 academic year.

PhD student Kelly Dineen, RN, JD, tells a compelling story about the importance of professional caregiver’s adherence to their scope of practice in “Responsibility and Collaboration in Health Team Care,” which appeared in the March 2009 issue of Virtual Mentor, the online ethics journal of the American Medical Association.

Anji Wall, a student in the MD/PhD program, was also involved in the March issue of Virtual Mentor, having edited it. Anji has had a busy year with publications and presentations, all while still finding time to write her dissertation.

Grants and Contracts
In July, 2008, James DuBois, PhD, DSc, was awarded the contract, “Responsible Conduct of Research Instructional Assessment Program,” with the Office of Research Integrity to develop a new test bank of questions that will assess important content in the responsible conduct of research.

Bander Center Updates
Two Continuing Medical Education modules have been written and are set to be available online by the end of the spring semester. One is entitled "Physician-Pharmaceutical Industry Interactions in Clinical Practice," and the other, "Physician-Pharmaceutical Industry Interactions: Receiving and Distributing Free Drug Samples." Both present current research on the medical business ethics issues concerning physicians and their interactions with pharmaceutical companies.
