The Saint Louis University Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science is participating in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) Lab Week Run Virtual 5K as a part of Medical Laboratory Professionals Week to raise money for ASCLS student scholarships, research and education.

A virtual 5K means that, once registered, participants can choose to run their 3.1 miles anywhere they choose; however, students from the university’s BLS department will be meeting at the Cypress North Shelter in Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, MO at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 29 to run their 5K together.

Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program Director and Instructor in the department of Biomedical Laboratory Science Amanda Reed, MAE, MLS (ASCP)CM, is excited for the attention that this event and this week brings to clinical laboratory personnel.

“According to the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, there are approximately 300,000 practitioners of clinical laboratory science in the United States,” Reed said. “Since the development of this career group in the 1920s, the clinical laboratory science professional has played an increasingly vital role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease.”

Reed went on to talk about this event being a chance to highlight an often overlooked member of the health care team.

“I envision this event to be a real celebration of laboratory professionals from all over the St. Louis area,” Reed said. “I believe this event has the potential to promote the profession, increase public awareness and promote the MLS program here at SLU.”
