SLU DCHS Faculty Receive Multiple ASAHP Awards

Saint Louis University (SLU) Doisy College of Health Sciences (DCHS) faculty received multiple awards at the 2021 Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) National Conference in late October. Athletic Training Program Director and Nutrition and Dietetics Interim Chairperson Anthony Breitbach, Ph.D., ATC, FASAHP, FNAP, received the President’s award and an interprofessional research team from SLU and DePaul University earned the Journal of Allied Health J. Warren Perry Award.

DCHS ASAHP Award Winners
DCHS faculty Dr. Anthony Breitbach and Dr. Ginge Kettenbach both won awards at the 2021 ASAHP Annual Conference.

The ASAHP Darrell C. Mase Presidential Citation recognizes Dr. Breitbach’s leadership and service to the ASAHP. Dr. Breitbach has served as the Chair of both the Partnerships, Alliances and Advocacy Committee and the Interprofessional Task Force. He represents ASAHP on the prestigious Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies Revision Work Group. He has served as the National Athletic Trainers’ Association liaison to ASAHP in 2015 and was named as an ASAHP Fellow, as well as receiving their Outstanding Member Award in 2018.

The J. Warren Perry Award recognizes the work done by the research team from SLU as the premiere article published in the previous three editions of the Journal of Allied Health. The research paper, Longitudinal Assessment of Students’ Perceived Collaboration Skills at an Institution with a Structured Interprofessional Education Curriculum, included contributions from Dr. Breitbach; David Pole, Ph.D., MPH; Ginge Kettenbach, PT, Ph.D., FNAP; Rachel (Shelly) Rauvola, Ph.D.; and Leslie Hinyard, Ph.D.

Dr. Breitbach is passionate about advancing interprofessional education and was thankful for the support from the ASAHP.

“I am honored to get this recognition by the ASAHP, an organization dedicated to Interprofessional collaboration. I am sincerely grateful to have the chance to work with excellent colleagues in ASAHP’s important and impactful work,” Dr. Breitbach said.

Dr. Kettenbach was very complimentary of her research team and all of the hard work they put into the project. She went on to explain why she believes interprofessional education is so important.

“The best care is given by a healthcare team. A team gives coordinated care that enhances the patient's safety and health in general because each profession involved in the patient's care helps the patient from their viewpoint,” Dr. Kettenbach said. “When each profession works alone and not together with other health care professionals, there can be a hole in the care given at times.”

The 2021 ASAHP Annual Conference took place as a virtual event on October 20 – 21. Learn more about the ASAHP Annual Conference.
