The Saint Louis University (SLU) Athletic Training (AT) program was recently named the recipient of the International Tutor Award from the Universidad Camilo José Cela (UCJC) in Madrid, Spain. The award acknowledges the program’s exceptional efforts in teaching exchange students from UCJC as a part of a collaboration between UCJC and SLU.

The International Tutor Award is just one of a series of awards that was given at UCJC’s sixth annual Tutor Awards. UCJC presented the award at a recognition event on October 21, 2021, where the award was accepted by Dr. Tania de la Fuente, assistant professor and program director of Health Sciences at SLU’s Madrid Campus. The partnership between SLU and UCJC began in 2014 and both institutions are looking forward to continued success in the years to come.

SLU AT Program Director Anthony Breitbach, Ph.D., ATC, was excited to learn that the program had earned this prestigious honor. Dr. Breitbach explained that SLU views the partnership as incredibly beneficial for both institutions.

“We consider our partnership with UCJC to be one that provides mutual benefit,” Dr. Breitbach said. “The opportunities that have been made possible have personally impacted nearly every student in our program because when UCJC students immerse themselves at SLU, they add a cultural richness to our SLU community.”

The relationship between the SLU AT program and UCJC has been fostered and strengthened by SLU-Madrid Campus. The SLU AT program has a curricular track at SLU-Madrid and UCJC faculty have taught an International Sports Medicine Seminar at there and coordinate excellent international clinical learning experiences for SLU students. In addition, the Madrid Campus partners with the SLU Doisy College of Health Sciences to provide courses for the Nutrition, Health and Wellness minor.

Dr. Breitbach and SLU AT Clinical Education Coordinator Tim Howell, Ed.D., ATC, PES, CES, went on to thank the UCJC health professionals’ generosity in providing impactful learning experiences in both classroom and clinical settings. Drs. Breitbach and Howell also acknowledge the important contributions from their UCJC colleagues: Jesus Guodemar, Alvaro Garcia-Romero, Fernando Reyes Gil, Eduardo Cimdevilla, Nick Ludwig and Roberto Murias Lozano.
