DCHS Introduces Summer Health Care Exploration Camp

The Saint Louis University (SLU) Doisy College of Health Sciences (DCHS) recently introduced its DCHS Summer Health Care Exploration Camp, which will be held for the first time in the summer of 2020. The camp is designed to inspire members of underrepresented communities to explore pursuing a career in health care – more specifically, in the allied health professions.

The camp is for rising high school sophomores and juniors potentially interested in a career in health care, and will be held on SLU’s campus from Sunday, June 7 – Saturday, June 13, 2020. Participants will stay in one of the university’s new residence halls for the entire week, have all meals provided, receive SLU gear and have organized evening activities planned with current SLU students. In addition, every student selected for the camp will receive scholarship to cover the full cost of the camp.

DCHS Associate Dean of Research Jesús García-Martínez, MD, Ph.D., is hopeful this camp will be able to make a meaningful impact on its participants and also a positive impact on the field of health sciences.

“We would like to help increase the number of minority students in the health sciences,” Dr. García-Martínez said. “This camp will be beneficial for students from underrepresented groups because they will gain a broader knowledge of the career opportunities available to them.”

Dr. García-Martínez went on to explain what the students would learn at the summer health care camp.

“We hope the students will gain a good understanding of the health professions we have in the Doisy College of Health Sciences,” Dr. García-Martínez said. “Through case presentations, we aim to show the students how the different health professionals interact with each other to treat patients and help them recover their health.”

To be eligible for the DCHS Summer Health Care Exploration Camp, applicants must have:

·         Taken and passed a high school English, Math and Science class – all with a grade of B or better

·         A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 4.0/5.0

·  A letter of interest (500 words or less) expressing interest in a particular program or the allied health fields

·         Applicants from underrepresented communities given priority

Applicants must apply between January 15 and March 31, 2020. Find out more information about the DCHS Summer Health Care Exploration Camp or email DCHSSummerScholars@health.slu.edu.
