Community Work and Service
Professor Brumfield-Young partners with community members and local and state policymakers
to help develop trauma-informed frameworks and strategies to address contributing
social factors of crime such as community trauma. In addition, Professor Brumfield-Young
works as an academic partner with legal teams, families, and community partners on
wrongful conviction cases, juvenile justice policy, and other criminal justice policies.
Professor Brumfield-Young served as a board member for the Northwest Academy of Law's
Criminal Justice 2+2 Program. The 2+2 Program allowed high school students to earn
two credits towards their criminal justice degree at a local community college while
still attending high school.
Professor Brumfield-Young collaborates with the SLPS as a Board member for the Northwest
Academy of Law's Criminal Justice 2+2 Program. The 2+2 Program allows high school
students to earn two credits towards their criminal justice degree at a local community
college while still attending high school.
Professor Brumfield-Young also collaborates with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police
Department, Saint Louis University's Department of Occupational Science and Occupational
Therapy, and Integrated Health Network on the Community Resource and Needs Screening
(CRANS) program at the St. Louis Justice Center. The goal is to screen and recommend
recently arrested persons to appropriate community resources and reduce community
victimization, offending, and jail recidivism.
Additionally, Professor Brumfield-Young works in partnership with local non-profit
agencies to review data regarding juvenile delinquency, response to delinquency, and
disproportionate minority representation in the criminal justice system.
