SLU Summer Advantage FAQs

Saint Louis University’s Summer Advantage program allows incoming freshmen to enroll in a foundational course designed to build essential academic skills and confidence while preparing for success in college‑level coursework. 

If you enroll in a SLU Summer Advantage course, you will receive a tuition grant to cover the cost of the class. There may be additional textbook fees associated with the course. 

Courses and Programs Offered

The SLU Office of Admission will email you with course/program options from the list below. 

Note: If an offering below is designated as online asynchronous, it is self-paced, online through Canvas with deadlines for assignments and exams. If it is designated as online synchronous, it is online through Canvas with specific meeting times on Zoom.

Seven-Week Math Courses - June 22-Aug. 7, 2026
  • MATH 0300: Math Skills for College -  Online Asynchronous
  • MATH 1010: Progress Towards College Algebra -  Online Asynchronous
  • MATH 1020: Progress Towards Pre-Calculus -  Online Asynchronous
Four-Week Skills/Problem-Solving Courses - July 13-Aug. 7, 2026
  • AS 1200: Introduction to Scientific Problem Solving -  Online Synchronous

This course prepares you for introductory STEM courses at SLU by strengthening key foundational skills essential for college success. Students will develop quantitative literacy and critical thinking abilities, learn effective study strategies and metacognitive practices to better understand how they learn, and gain experience using academic technologies while becoming familiar with SLU’s support systems and resources.

  • Billiken Beginnings: Ready, Set SLU! - Online Synchronous 

This program is designed to help students transition successfully to college life. The course builds essential academic and personal skills, including study strategies, time management, use of academic technologies, and navigating campus resources, while fostering confidence and readiness for the college experience.

About Canvas

Canvas is a web-based learning management system, or LMS. Learning institutions, educators and students use Canvas to access and manage online course materials and communicate about skill development and learning achievement.

This class does not count toward graduation. Please retake the placement exam after completing work in the learning modules.
30 - 45 MATH 1000: Intermediate Algebra
 
Please retake the placement test after completing work in the learning modules. This class does not meet any University Undergraduate Core or major requirements but prepares students for higher levels of math.
41 - 60

STAT 1100: Intro to Statistics

STAT 1100: Intro to Statistics meets the requirement for Quantitative Reasoning in the University Undergraduate Core.

MATH 1220: Finite Math

MATH 1220: Finite Math (and higher levels of math) meets the requirement for Quantitative Reasoning in the University Undergraduate Core.

What are the benefits of participating in SLU Summer Advantage class? 

SLU Summer Advantage helps you build a solid foundation for success in higher-level STEM classes. 

You will have the opportunity to practice foundational STEM skills that are important for math and science classes that you will be taking at SLU later in your degree program.

Am I required to participate?

SLU Summer Advantage is optional. However, we recommend taking advantage of this option to ensure success in your chosen program. 

Will SLU Summer Advantage count toward my degree? 

SLU Summer Advantage does not fill a specific degree requirement. However, it will prepare you for the required courses in your chosen degree program. 

How much does this program cost?

You will receive a tuition grant to cover the cost. 

Do I need a textbook? 

No, you will not need a textbook. 

Will participating affect my SLU Difference Award?

No, the tuition grant that will be used to cover the cost will not be deducted from your SLU Difference Award. 

How do I know which course/program I should take?  

You will receive an email from the Saint Louis University Office of Admission with information on which offering will best prepare you to succeed in future courses. 

How do I register? 

You will receive an email from the Saint Louis University Office of Admission to complete a short form.

Once you complete that form, a SLU staff member will register you. You will receive an email shortly after you are registered. 

Where is SLU Summer Advantage offered?

SLU Summer Advantage is offered through Canvas, which can be accessed via your MySLU account in My Apps Dashboard.

How much time per week should I expect to spend? 
  • AS 1200: Introduction to Scientific Problem Solving - online synchronous course meeting on Zoom from 1 - 2 p.m. Central time on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. 
    • Students can expect to spend four hours in the course in addition to these meeting times. 
  • MATH 0300: Math Skills for College, MATH 1010: Progress Towards College Algebra, MATH 1020: Progress Towards Pre-Calculus - online asynchronous  
    • Students can expect to spend three to eight hours per week in the course. 
How do I log into my MySLU account? 

Please consult your admission notification for details on how to log in to your MySLU account. If you need help logging into your account, email summer@slu.edu, and a SLU staff member will connect you with your admission counselor. 

If you have not set up your MySLU account, follow these instructions (PDF). You will need your SLU Banner ID and Net ID when setting up your account for the first time. Your SLU Banner ID and Net ID can be found in your admission notification.

What if I have a question before the program begins? 

Email summer@slu.edu, and a SLU staff member will assist with your question. 

Who do I contact if I have technology issues?

Call the SLU ITS Service Desk at 314-977-4000 if you encounter any technology issues. ITS is available 7 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Friday, to handle general technology and support calls. Outside normal business hours, press option 1 to speak with an on-call IT staff member. You may also chat with ITS at ask.slu.edu

If the service desk cannot resolve an issue over the phone, they will escalate it to the desktop team for resolution.

If it's a situation related to Canvas, call 314-977-4000, and press 3 to speak directly with Canvas support.

What happens if I want to drop? 

Please email summer@slu.edu, and a SLU staff member will process your drop. 

Can I retake the math placement test if I do not take one of these courses?

You may take the math placement test up to five times if you want to improve your score. You must wait at least 48 hours between each attempt and complete at least three hours of work in the learning modules.
