SLU Summer Advantage FAQs

Saint Louis University Summer Advantage allows incoming freshmen to take a foundational math, science or engineering course to prepare for required courses specific to their degree programs. 

If you enroll in a SLU Summer Advantage course, you will receive a tuition grant to cover the cost of the class. There may be additional textbook fees associated with the course. 

Courses Offered

You can take one course from the list below. The SLU Office of Admission will email you with course-selection information. 

Note: If a course below is designated as online asynchronous, the course is self-paced, online through Canvas with deadlines for assignments and exams. If a course listed below is designated as online synchronous, the course is online through Canvas with specific meeting times on Zoom.

  • MATH 0300: Math Skills for College -  Online Asynchronous

I've taken the math placement exam (ALEKS). Now what?

0 - 29 MATH 0930: Foundations of Algebra
 
This class does not count toward graduation. Please retake the placement exam after completing work in the learning modules.
30 - 45 MATH 1000: Intermediate Algebra
 
Please retake the placement test after completing work in the learning modules. This class does not meet any University Undergraduate Core or major requirements but prepares students for higher levels of math.
46 - 60

MATH: 1200 College Algebra

or

MATH 1220: Finite Math

or

STAT 1100: Intro to Statistics

STAT 1100: Intro to Statistics and MATH 1220: Finite Math (and higher levels of math) meet the requirements for Quantitative Reasoning in the University Undergraduate Core.

MATH 1400 Pre-Calculus

STAT 1300: Elementary Stats with Computers

Placement at this level is also required for enrollment in CHEM 1110/1130: General Chemistry.

If you score at least 76 on ALEKS, you may take the optional tests for placement into MATH 1520: Calculus II or MATH 2530: Calculus III.

 
Am I required to take a class?

These courses are optional. However, we recommend taking advantage of this option to ensure success in your chosen program. 

Will the class count toward my degree? 

These courses do not fill a specific degree requirement. However, they will prepare you for the required courses in your chosen degree program. 

How much does this course cost?

You will receive a tuition grant to cover the cost of the summer class. 

Do I need a textbook? 

No, you will not need a textbook for your SLU Summer Advantage course. 

Will taking this class affect my SLU Difference Award?

No, the tuition grant that will be used to cover the cost of this summer class will not be deducted from your SLU Difference Award. 

How do I know which course I should take?  

You will receive an email from the Saint Louis University Office of Admission with information on which course will best prepare you to succeed in future courses. 

How do I register for the course? 

You will receive an email from the Saint Louis University Office of Admission to complete a short form.

Once you complete that form, a SLU staff member will register you for the course. You will receive an email shortly after you are registered with your course information and registration confirmation. 

Where is my course offered?

Online courses are offered through Canvas, which can be accessed via your MySLU account in the ‘My Apps Dashboard.’

How much time per week should I expect to spend on my course? 
  • AS 1200: Introduction to Scientific Problem Solving - online synchronous course meeting on Zoom from 1 - 2 p.m. Central time on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. 
    • Students can expect to spend four hours in the course in addition to these meeting times. 
  • SE 1000: Science & Engineering Problem Solving Fundamentals - online synchronous meeting on Zoom from 3:10 - 4 p.m. Central time on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
    • Students can also expect to spend four hours in the course in addition to the live meeting times. 
  • MATH 0300: Math Skills for College, MATH 1010: Progress Towards College Algebra, MATH 1020: Progress Towards Pre-Calculus - online asynchronous  
    • Students can expect to spend three to eight hours per week in the course. 
How do I log into my MySLU account? 

Please consult your admission notification for details on how to log in to your MySLU account. If you need help logging into your account, email summer@slu.edu, and a SLU staff member will connect you with your admission counselor. 

If you have not set up your MySLU account, follow these instructions (PDF). You will need your SLU Banner ID and Net ID when setting up your account for the first time. Your SLU Banner ID and Net ID can be found in your admission notification.

What if I have a question before the course begins? 

Email summer@slu.edu, and a SLU staff member will assist with your question. 

Who do I contact if I have technology issues with the course?

Call the SLU ITS Service Desk at 314-977-4000 if you encounter any technology issues. ITS is available 7 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Friday, to handle general technology and support calls. Outside normal business hours, press option 1 to speak with an on-call IT staff member. You may also chat with ITS at ask.slu.edu

If the service desk cannot resolve an issue over the phone, they will escalate it to the desktop team for resolution.

If it's a situation related to Canvas, call 314-977-4000, and press 3 to speak directly with Canvas support.

What happens if I want to drop the course? 

Please email summer@slu.edu, and a SLU staff member will drop you from the class. 

Can I retake the math placement test if I do not take one of these courses?

You may take the math placement test up to five times if you want to improve your score. You must wait at least 48 hours between each attempt and complete at least three hours of work in the learning modules.
