Celebrating Educational Leadership: A Fireside Chat with Howard Fields, Ph.D., and Karen Hall, Ed.D.
05/06/2025
Saint Louis University School of Education hosted a significant event as part of its centennial celebration on Feb. 6: A book talk featuring Howard Fields III, Ph.D., and Karen Hall, Ed.D., assistant professor of education.
This engaging discussion centered around Fields' impactful book, "Transfers & Open Enrollment: The Denigration of Black School Communities," which critically examines the implications of educational policies affecting Black communities.

Fields has been a transformative figure in St. Louis education since 2008, recognized for his courageous leadership and unwavering commitment to social equity and diversity. His tenure as principal began during a tumultuous period marked by the Ferguson protests, where he not only supported his community but also achieved remarkable educational outcomes, including a 200-percent increase in his school’s annual performance report. Fields' work extends beyond local schools; he empowers educational leaders and stakeholders globally, advocating for inclusive environments where all students can thrive.
In his book, Fields addresses the ramifications of the Breitenfeld vs. School District of Clayton decision, which catalyzed the Student Transfer Law in 2013. This law, while not new in concept, introduced significant challenges by mandating that under-resourced districts bear the costs of transporting students from Black communities to predominantly white schools. As we mark a decade since this ruling, Fields' analysis sheds light on the ongoing effects of such policies, emphasizing the need for a critical reevaluation of educational equity.
The event featured a fireside chat format, where Hall engaged Fields in a relaxed, conversational dialogue. This intimate setting allowed for deeper insights into his writing process and personal reflections on the themes of his book. Audience members were invited to participate in a Q&A session, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives.
As we reflect on this enlightening event, we are reminded of the importance of reimagining educational leadership and innovation. Fields' unique blend of research expertise and practical solutions offers a pathway toward building inclusive, high-performing educational communities.
The School of Education at Saint Louis University remains committed to championing these transformative ideas, ensuring that success is attainable for every learner.
