SLU-Madrid has increased the number of courses offered this summer to over 50 – along with internships, volunteer activities, programs for graduate students and even a science camp for high school students.

“We’ve designed our summer offerings,” said SLU-Madrid Academic Dean and Director Paul Vita, “specifically to serve the needs of our students, especially those who may not have the opportunity to study abroad during the academic year.”

SLU-Madrid's Summer in Spain program gives university students from around the world an opportunity to get ahead in their studies and to discover Madrid and Spain. The Office of Student Life organizes an enhanced program of cultural activities during the summer sessions, to ensure an enriching experience outside of the classroom.  Pictured above, summer students take a bicycle tour of Madrid Rio, one of the city's large recreational and cultural areas.

Summer courses include those one would expect in a study-abroad program in Spain: Spanish language, history and culture classes. In addition, SLU-Madrid offers a full range of liberal arts courses that fulfill undergraduate core requirements across SLU’s colleges and schools, from accounting and archeology to theology and oceanography.

New Courses

SLU’s position as an American university in Spain also opens SLU’s innovative curriculum to students residing in Europe. New this summer are courses in education and psychology including Leadership and Service and Organizational Psychology.

Offered through the School of Education, Leadership and Service is a seminar designed to introduce the theories and practices common to organizational leadership. Ideal for business and psychology students, Organizational Psychology examines personal, environmental and organizational factors as they relate to such topics as personnel selection, motivation, job satisfaction and management in profit-making organizations. Both of these new courses will be delivered by prestigious faculty visiting from the St. Louis campus.

Real-World Experience in the Health Sciences

SLU-Madrid will also continue to offer immersion programs for health science students looking to advance their studies while gaining an understanding of Spain’s health care system and culture of well-being. Pre-medical students shadow physicians at local hospitals and health care clinics while nursing students take part in an intensive, clinical immersion program. Athletic training students may also pursue field internships, including placements with Spain’s national teams.

Summer Study Abroad for Athletes

The Athletic Department at SLU-Madrid strives to accommodate student athletes of all levels who train while pursuing their studies, including high-level athletes whose training and competition commitments preclude them from studying abroad during the traditional academic year. Competitive swimmers, for example, are invited to continue their high level of training at Spain’s most prestigious aquatics center, Real Canoe Natación Club.

Graduate Study

Summer experiences in Spain are not limited to undergraduate students. For nearly 30 years, SLU-Madrid has received international recognition for its Master of Arts in Spanish degree. This program, offered in June and July, is designed around the busy schedules of Spanish secondary school teachers, permitting them to earn their M.A. over the course of four summers, enriching their knowledge of Spanish language and culture through living in Spain. SLU-Madrid is also home to international programs developed by SLU’s Law School and the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business.

The Summer in Spain programs run from May 25 through June 25, 2020. The Second Summer Session, which features SLU-Madrid’s prestigious M.A. in Spanish program, runs from June 29 through July 30. More information is available at Summer in Spain.
