SLU-Madrid Leaders Reflect on Campus' Evolution in Latest Alumni Podcast

by Isaiah Voss

Saint Louis University-Madrid's transformation from a traditional study abroad program into a comprehensive international campus is the focus of the latest episode of "1818: A Saint Louis University Alumni Podcast."

William P. Johnson, J.D., rector of SLU-Madrid, and Victoria Villarreal, associate vice president, chief financial officer and vice rector of SLU-Madrid, joined hosts Meg Connolly (A&S '90, GRAD A&S' 92) and Tony Minor (A&S' 03) to discuss the campus's history, the student experience and their vision for its future.

"The origin story of SLU-Madrid is a fascinating one," Johnson said in the podcast episode. "It really started as a traditional study abroad campus and, in that sense, had a pretty typical start. But the story since the beginning has changed so dramatically. We've seen various iterations of the SLU-Madrid campus over the decades of its existence."

They reflected on arriving in Spain as part of a close-knit group of just a few dozen students, sharing memories of cultural immersion, late-night tapas outings and the leadership of Raymond L. Sullivant, S.J., who guided the program during its formative years.

The episode explores how SLU-Madrid has evolved over more than five decades while highlighting its continued commitment to providing students with a global, Jesuit education.
