Saint Louis University's art history program teaches you to examine the social context
in which art was historically (and continues to be) created. You’ll also gain essential
research and communication skills, allowing you to better analyze art.
Major in Art History
SLU's art history students are not limited to classroom learning. Interested students
can pursue opportunities to experience firsthand what a career in the arts involves
by preparing exhibitions, curating collections or even planning and presenting lectures
and tours for the public. You will be encouraged to spend a summer or semester on
our campus in Madrid, where our art history faculty can connect you with great works
housed in internationally renowned museums.
SLU's art history program can also connect you to internships in the arts locally
(the Saint Louis Art Museum and numerous other galleries are all within a 10-mile
radius of campus) and across the country. The Saint Louis University art history program
is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
To earn a Bachelor of Arts in art history, students must complete 36 credit hours
of required coursework. Eighteen of the 36 credit hours must be from the 3000/4000-level
SLU’s art history program offers an in-depth study of the art world. Our curriculum
covers a wide range of art, so SLU students have the opportunity to delve deeper into
specific periods of art history. You’ll receive a strong, balanced foundation in the
study of global traditions in art history and better understand the context and importance
Many art history graduates from SLU work in art-related institutions such as galleries,
auction houses and museums. Others have continued their studies in internationally
recognized graduate programs, or work in fields that require an understanding of our
visually based culture and the ability to express intelligent, well-researched opinions.
The full-time faculty in SLU’s art history program teach both their specialty areas
and general courses. Our faculty members encourage students to craft their own educational
experiences and can help you identify specific interests.
