School of Law Mourns the Passing of Cherished Staff Member
Joyce Brown, born and raised in St. Louis, passed away on Friday, Nov. 7, after bravely facing a prolonged illness. Brown served as the program coordinator in the Office of Student Services in the Saint Louis University School of Law for more than 14 years, greeting a countless number of students and visitors who came to the office with a smile.
Brown deeply loved the students at the SLU law school. Each class brought her tremendous joy, and as many know, she attended nearly every event at the law school.

Those who knew and worked with Joyce will always remember her positive disposition that brightened the SLU LAW community. Her signature flower pin, which she wore faithfully, was a perfect reflection of the grace and kindness she brought to the law school every day. Brown always showed her genuine care for everyone she encountered, including her family, friends (whom she made everywhere she went), and colleagues. Most of all, Brown's dedication to supporting and working with the SLU LAW student body will be remembered most.
"I have never met anyone with a more positive outlook and friendly demeanor than Joyce Brown,” said Jon Baris, dean of students. “Her genuine care and support for her family, friends, and colleagues had a deep impact on everyone who knew her. But most of all, I will remember what she meant to the SLU LAW student body, past and present. I can absolutely say I am a better person, not just for having the privilege to work with Joyce for the past 14 years, but also for being able to call her my friend."

Brown worked for Saint Louis University Hospital for many years before joining the School of Law. She is survived by her son, Brandon Brown, his wife, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In her family, Brown was famous for hosting special events for her “club,” which consisted of her grandchildren, great-nieces, and nephews. They loved spending time together skating, shopping, having gatherings in the park, and so much more.
Services for Brown will be held at 10 a.m., Nov. 15, 2025.
