Friday Sandwich Review Society Visits the Missouri Supreme Court

Saint Louis University’s School of Law is home to many distinctive student organizations, including the Friday Sandwich Review Society, whose curiosity and camaraderie took them well beyond the classroom on Nov. 19.

In the early morning hours, 25 members of the group traveled to Jefferson City, Missouri, for a rare, up-close look at advocacy before the Missouri Supreme Court. Joined by SLU School of Law Dean Twinette Johnson, Dean of Students Jon Baris, Dean of Admissions Mike Kolnik, and Dean of Career Services Mary Pat McInnis, the students observed oral arguments and watched seasoned attorneys make their case at the highest level of state jurisprudence.

Their visit continued with a private tour of the courthouse, followed by an informal lunch with the court’s law clerks. True to the organization’s spirit, over sandwiches, the students asked candid questions about the clerks’ career paths, daily work, and experiences inside Missouri’s highest court.

The afternoon brought even more opportunity for engagement when the judges themselves met with the group for an open panel discussion, fielding student questions that ranged from policy considerations to professional advice. The day concluded with a conversation with Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, who reflected on her own journey in the law and offered thoughtful, personal insights into public service.

Landry Buck, the president of Friday Sandwich Review, reflected on the event, “This experience was one of a kind, and we are amazed with how it turned out. When we started this organization two years ago, we could only dream of events like this. So being the ones who spearheaded something that brings SLU LAW together and to the forefront of the legal community is something that we take a lot of pride in and are very thankful for.”

The members of the Friday Sandwich Review Society hope to turn this event into an annual tradition and continue to bolster the organization's relationships with the Missouri legal community.
