Summer in Spain
SLU-Madrid is offering over 40 courses this summer – along with internships, volunteer activities, programs for graduate students, and even a science camp for high school students.
"Our intensive summer courses are open to study abroad students who aren't able experience Madrid during the academic year," said SLU-Madrid Academic Dean and Director Paul Vita, Ph.D. "The program also serves students who wish to make up missed credits or accelerate their progress towards their degrees."
Robust Undergraduate Offerings
In addition to the courses students expect from a study-abroad program in Spain – Spanish language, history and culture classes – SLU-Madrid has a full range of liberal arts offerings that fulfill undergraduate core requirements across the University's colleges and schools, from accounting and ethics to theology and oceanography.
Real-World Experience in the Health Sciences
SLU-Madrid continues to offer immersion programs for health science students looking to advance their studies while gaining an understanding of Spain's health care system and culture of wellbeing. Pre-medical students shadow physicians at local hospitals and health care clinics, while nursing students take part in an intensive, clinical immersion program.
CiTESOL English Teaching Certificate Program
This summer, SLU-Madrid once again offers the intensive summer CiTESOL certification program for students who have little or no English language teaching experience, and who wish to earn a credential that allows them to teach English to speakers of other languages around the world. The certification involves coursework in linguistics, methods of second language acquisition, and a teaching practicum.
Extreme Science Experience Summer Camp
With nearly 20 years experience running summer camps for teens, SLU-Madrid will once again partner with Colegio San José in Villafranca de los Barros (Badajoz, Spain) to offer the most innovative camp in Spain: "Extreme Science Experience." Open to both English and Spanish speakers aged 11 to 16, the camp aims to simulate language learning through adventures in science and technology.
Summer experiences in Spain are not limited to undergraduate students. For nearly 30 years, SLU-Madrid has received international recognition for its Masters of Arts in Spanish degree. This program, offered in June and July, is designed around the busy schedules of Spanish secondary school teachers, permitting them to earn their M.A. over the course of four summers, enriching their knowledge of Spanish language and culture through living in Spain.
SLU-Madrid has expanded the summer graduate course offerings to include coursework for the M.A. in Political Science and Public Affairs with a concentration in International Relations and Crisis. This unique program, which launched in September 2020, was designed by SLU-Madrid faculty in response to the increasing number, intensity and impact of international crises in recent years. Students this summer will continue their study of key theoretical, political and social dimensions of the global governance of insecurity.
In addition, SLU-Madrid also is once again hosting SLU's Law School Summer Program and we look forward to welcoming visitors from SLU-St. Louis, including Law School Dean William Johnson, J.D. and Professor Brendan Roediger, J.D.
The Summer in Spain programs run from May 24 through June 24, 2021; the Second Summer Session, which features SLU-Madrid's prestigious M.A. in Spanish program, runs from June 28 through July 29. More information is available at Summer in Spain.
