M.D. Admission

Saint Louis University School of Medicine uses a holistic admissions process. You’ll be evaluated as an individual whose passions, background and experiences drive your commitment to the medical field.

Evaluating the Whole Applicant: What Sets You Apart in the M.D. Admission Process?

Your success in medical school requires academic excellence, but your lifelong passion for medicine is bigger than a test score. True to the University’s mission of caring for the whole person, our admission committee considers you as the multifaceted, dynamic individual that you are.

Because SLU SOM believes your medical education should exist with, rather than replace, your personal identity, the committee considers:

  • Academics and Community Engagement: your academics, extracurricular activities and community service
  • Lived Experiences: your individual life experiences, hobbies and personal interests
  • Personal Attributes: your maturity level, character traits, motivation and commitment to a career in medicine

How to Apply

Your Major, Your Pathway

Choose the undergraduate major that aligns with your passions. SLU SOM prioritizes deep academic discipline across all educational pathways rather than favoring a specific degree. A diverse applicant cohort creates a richer learning environment for you.

Suitable areas of study include the natural sciences, behavioral sciences or humanities; you’ll just need to show balanced preparation based on your chosen track:

  • Humanities or Behavioral Science Major: Demonstrate strong academic performance across the natural sciences.
  • Natural Science Major: Demonstrate broad exposure to the humanities and social sciences.
