Practice Areas

After earning his medical degree, Michael Smiley, M.D., went on to a diverse career in the United States Navy. It was during a deployment as a Naval Flight Surgeon that a 26-year-old enlisted Aircrew presented with hemoptysis and was ultimately diagnosed with cystic fibrosis; thus, Smiley’s interest in CF began. Smiley completed his Flight Surgery tour at the Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine; pediatric residency at The Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA; a tour as a general pediatrician at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Rota, Spain; and fellowship in pediatric pulmonary medicine at Nationwide Children’s Ohio. From 2016-2019 he was stationed in San Diego at the Naval Medical Center serving as Cystic Fibrosis Affiliate Center Director and Director of Pediatric Subspecialties. During his time in San Diego, he created a much-needed transition program for military dependents with CF.

In 2019, Smiley left Active Duty service and joined SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. His primary interests relate to quality improvement in CF transition and CF newborn screening.  He has developed a clinical interest in genotype-phenotype correlation and the diversity of CF phenotypes, enhanced by his involvement with the CRMS/CFSPID Guidelines Committee from 2021-2023.  In his abundance of spare time, he participates in the Air Force Reserves as a pediatrician assigned to a humanitarian and disaster relief platform with the 932nd Medical Group at Scott Air Force Base.
