Dignity-Based Leadership
The Emerson Leadership Institute at Saint Louis University's Chaifetz School of Business (CSB) advances dignity-based leadership through education, research and leadership development. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person, this approach prepares leaders to foster cultures of respect, empathy and purpose in their organizations and communities.
What Is Dignity-Based Leadership?
Dignity-based leadership is a people-centered approach grounded in the belief that every individual has inherent worth and deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of role or status. Rather than emphasizing hierarchy, control or performance alone, dignity-based leadership prioritizes trust, authentic relationships and a shared sense of purpose.
Its core principles include recognizing the inherent dignity of every person, listening with empathy, creating psychologically safe environments and leading with authenticity and moral responsibility. In today's volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world, this approach helps leaders build resilient organizations where people feel valued, engaged and empowered to adapt to change.
Organizations that embrace dignity-based leadership foster collaboration, transparent communication and meaningful work. They create cultures where individuals thrive not only as employees, but also as people contributing to a greater purpose.
Why Is Dignity-Based Leadership Important to Jesuit Education?
Dignity-based leadership reflects the Jesuit tradition of developing the whole person. While leadership development focuses on building practical skills such as communication, strategic thinking and decision-making, leadership formation emphasizes character, conscience, purpose and integrity. It is the ongoing process of becoming the kind of leader who serves others with empathy and moral courage.
By recognizing the inherent dignity of every individual, students learn to lead through compassion rather than authority. This approach cultivates reflection, humility and service while preparing graduates to make ethical decisions in complex environments.
Within the Inspirational Paradigm for Jesuit Business Education, students' desire for meaning, connection and impact fuels their personal and professional growth. Dignity-based leadership supports that growth by strengthening empathy, self-awareness and ethical decision-making. It promotes inclusive communities built on respect, deep listening and shared purpose while encouraging students to view work as a vocation rather than simply a career.
Ultimately, dignity-based leadership teaches future leaders that success is measured not only by results but also by how people are treated along the way. It transforms leadership into a practice rooted in justice, compassion and human flourishing.

The Emerson Leadership Institute
The Emerson Leadership Institute (ELI) serves as the driving force behind the Chaifetz School of Business' dignity-based leadership initiatives. As both a catalyst and connector, ELI transforms the principles of dignity into practical learning experiences for students, faculty, staff, administrators and executive leaders.
Within the Chaifetz School, ELI supports leadership formation by integrating dignity-based leadership throughout the curriculum through initiatives such as the Undergraduate Leadership Academy, Graduate Leadership Academy and customized workshops that strengthen a dignity-centered culture across classrooms and teams.
Beyond the university, ELI partners with business and community leaders through executive education programs that emphasize leading with respect, empathy and purpose in today's complex organizations. By combining competence with conscience, ELI prepares leaders to create organizations where people and performance flourish together.
