Professor Isaak Dore Publishes Book on Materialist Philosophy

Isaak Dore, the Center for International and Comparative Law distinguished professor of law and philosophy emeritus at Saint Louis University, has published his latest book “A Materialist Theory of Justice: A Methodological, Philosophical, and Moral Justification.” The book presents a comprehensive theory of justice grounded in materialist epistemology, cultural materialism, and a focus on human flourishing. Dore, who taught at SLU for 35 years, defends his theory of justice with a threefold justification (methodological, philosophical and moral).

In the book, published by Palgrave Macmillan, Dore uses a multidisciplinary approach to argue that justice is not simply a matter of moral institutions or abstract ideals but a product of the material conditions and social relations that shape human life. The approach has a strong anthropological and philosophical grounding.

The book argues for the effectiveness of the methodology of cultural materialism to diagnose social ills, using it to advance a theory of social justice.  It also uses the methodology to examine specific social problems in the United States.

Dore is a former human rights lawyer in the United Nations, he has over 50 years of experience teaching and writing the areas of law, philosophy, anthropology, and multiculturalism, with eight books and scores of articles in these fields.
