Creative Writing Summer Institute
The SLU-Madrid Creative Writing Summer Institute is an intensive, workshop-based program designed for writers at every stage of their practice — from first-time fiction writers to experienced essayists looking to deepen their craft. Set in one of Europe's most storied literary capitals, the Institute brings together students from SLU-Madrid, visiting universities, and the wider community for several weeks of immersive creative work.
The program centers on two of the most vital forms of literary expression: fiction and creative nonfiction/memoir. Through close reading, guided writing exercises, and peer workshop, participants develop their individual voice while building the critical vocabulary to talk meaningfully about literature and craft. Madrid — its streets, its bookshops, its history — serves not just as backdrop but as material: a city that has shaped and inspired writers across generations, and that continues to do so.
Program Description
In daily sessions with an accomplished writer, students will hone their craft through exercises, discussions, close examination of exemplary work, and workshops focused on student writing. Most days will also see the class venture beyond the classroom to collect inspiration from the city itself by writing in the parks, museums, and plazas that have inspired generations of writers. On Thursdays we will gather in the auditorium for craft talks, readings, and a reception.
Day trips might include train rides to the historic towns of Aranjuez, Alcalá, Segovia or Toledo as well as a hike in the natural surroundings of the Sierra de Guadarrama.
The SLU-Madrid Creative Writing Summer Institute runs for approximately three weeks each summer. The program is conducted entirely in English and is open to participants of all experience levels.
Workshop sessions meet Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and combine craft discussion, close reading of published works, and the generative workshop format in which participants share and respond to each other's writing. Separate workshop tracks are offered in fiction and creative nonfiction/memoir.
Beyond the classroom, the Institute offers a full calendar of literary activities, including:
- Readings and craft lectures by working writers
- Bookshop visits to Madrid's independent and international literary community
- Day trips to literary sites in and around Madrid
The course may be taken for academic credit or simply for the experience.
Specific dates vary by year but tend to run from late May into early June. Please check this page or contact us for the current summer's schedule.
