Medical Information

Emergencies

Across the European Union, 112 is the universal emergency phone number.

Never hesitate to call 112 in a life-threatening situation. While accessing emergency services is free of change, you should be aware that your Sanitas insurance does not cover care in public hospitals, where you would be taken by an ambulance dispatched by 112. Nonetheless, your safety comes first.

Ask to be taken to one of the following Sanitas network hospitals. Be sure to take your Sanitas card with you.

Hospital La Luz
Calle del Maestro Ángel Llorca, 8
+34 91 453 02 00
Two-minute walking distance from campus

Hospital Universitario de Madrid
Plaza del Conde del Valle de Suchil, 16
+34 91 447 66 00
Metro: San Bernardo, Lines 2 and 4

Sanatorio el Rosario
Calle del Príncipe de Vergara, 53

Metro: Núñez de Balboa, Lines 5 and 9

USP Hospital San Camilo
Calle de Juan Bravo, 39
+34 91 402 21 00
Metro: Diego de León, Lines 4, 5 and 6

If you're not in Madrid, call Sanitas at the number listed at the back of your Sanitas card and ask where you can go.

Campus Emergencies

This phone number is only for health and safety emergencies. Call once you have contacted 112 or you're at one of the hospitals listed above. If no one answers immediately, leave a message. A Student Affairs staff member will call you back.

If you find yourself in legal trouble or need official documentation replaced (such as a passport or visa), SLU-Madrid Student Affairs staff may not be able to assist you.

SLU-Madrid's 24-hour counseling emergency number is +34 609 26 93 23.

Doctors and Pharmacies

Every SLU-Madrid student registered for at least one credit is covered by Multi Sanitas Health Insurance.

Only doctors and hospitals that work with Sanitas will accept Sanitas Health Insurance. You do not need to pay any additional fees to access their services. If you choose to go to other hospitals or doctors, you will be charged. There will be no reimbursement.

Pick up your Sanitas card in the Office of Student Affairs at the beginning of each semester or session. Accidents can happen. Do not wait until you need the card to request it.

Sinews

SLU-Madrid works closely with Sinews Multilingual Therapy Institute, a private mental health clinic located in the city center that specializes in providing multilingual mental health services to international clients.  Registered students are eligible to receive six therapy sessions with a Sinews psychologist, free of charge. (Additional sessions or services will need to be paid for by the student.) To access this service, make an appointment with a wellness counselor to request a consultation and receive more information.

Psychiatry services are also available through Sinews, meaning that students can work with an interdisciplinary team that promotes communication and cooperation among health care providers.  The student medical insurance, Sanitas, does not cover Sinews services or any mental health services with providers outside of the Sanitas network. Although Sanitas does cover some basic psychiatric care, English-speaking psychiatrists and psychologists are rarely available through the Sanitas network, and most English-speaking mental health providers in Spain work in the private health care sector on a fee-for-service basis.

For this reason, SLU-Madrid strongly recommends that students with pre-existing mental health conditions and/or students who anticipate the need for regular mental health services plan for extra health care expenses prior to their arrival in Madrid.  It is recommended that students purchase additional insurance in their home countries (example: GeoBlue, HTH health insurance, CISI) that will cover or reimburse them for private, out-of-network mental health services. Students should budget accordingly for these services (approximately 70-80 euros for a psychotherapy session, 100-120 euros for a session with a psychiatrist) to ensure they have access to regular mental health care. The SLU-Madrid Wellness Center can provide more information about private mental health services as well as a list of English-speaking psychiatrists and psychologists in the Madrid area in the private sector.

Commonly Visited Physicians

Many specialists require a referral from a general practitioner in order to make an appointment. Therefore, even if you know what type of medical specialist you need to see, we recommend making an appointment with a general practitioner first.
