Ph.D. – Applied Physiology – Georgia Institute of Technology
B.A. – Biological Sciences – University of Chicago
Research Interests
My research interests focus on the use of imaging technology for medical education
and anatomical investigation. In particular I use 3D reconstruction of medical imaging
(typically CT or MRI) for projects such as measuring variation of the Circle of Willis
and printing low-cost models of the skull as study aids. I’m also interested in developing
educational modules involving ultrasound.

Research Interests
I spend much of my time in the classroom teaching gross anatomy and neurobiology.
Interacting with students and seeing them grow, not just academically, but as human
beings, is quite rewarding. My research interests are broad and range from exploration
of student study habits and how those relate to health/wellness, the use of AI in
undergraduate medical education and anatomical education, use of unique contrast agents
to allow visualize microvasculature in very fine detail, and investigation of anatomical
variations in the nervous, arterial, and venous systems.

Alicia Pate, Ph.D.
Assistant professor
Director of physiology education
Courses Taught:
MED-100: Molecular Foundations of Medicine
ANAT-5400: Human Systems Physiology
MED-110, MED-120, MED-130: Normal Structure and Function Physiology Lead
MED-170: Cardiovascular System

Education:
BS in Biochemistry from University of Missouri in Columbia
Master’s Coursework in Forensic Science at George Washington University
PhD in Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences from Saint Louis University
Research Interests:
Dr. Pate’s areas of professional interest include curriculum development, mentorship,
educational scholarship, and advocacy for gender equality in science. Her primary
research interest lies at the intersection of neuroendocrinology, reproductive biology,
and metabolic regulation. Specifically, she is intrigued by the dynamic role of neuropeptides
in modulating physiological processes, particularly those related to reproduction
and energy homeostasis. She aims to explore how regulatory molecules like nesfatin-1
and neuronostatin interact with hormonal signals across different phases of the estrous
cycle and how these interactions influence cardiovascular, reproductive, and metabolic
functions.
