Saint Louis University School of Medicine’s Section of Sports Medicine is dedicated to getting both pediatric and adult patients safely back in the game or to their desired level of function.
From Sideline to Recovery: Keeping Athletes Active
The Section of Sports Medicine is a team of non-operative and operative providers, including team physicians for SLU Billiken Athletics as well as other area colleges and high schools.
The section actively pursues research at the forefront of sports medicine and is committed to providing the highest standard of education via regular conferences, lectures and clinical rotations.
Resident Education
The Section of Sports Medicine exposes residents to advanced imaging and surgical equipment for state-of-the-art procedures, including:
- Minimally invasive arthroscopy and joint reconstruction (shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle)
- Ultrasound-guided biologic regenerative medicine
Fellowship Education
Faculty in the Section of Sports Medicine and Department of Family and Community Medicine offer fellowship training in primary care sports medicine. The one-year program combines athletic and clinical training with mastery of musculoskeletal care, procedural skills and exercise science. Highlights include:
- Team physician experience
- Specialized clinical rotations
- Integrated approaches to whole-patient care
- Immersive training in on-field emergency management and medical transportation and training room operations

Physical Therapy Education
Sports medicine physicians work closely with faculty from the SSM Health/Saint Louis University Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Residency Program, providing up-to-date, evidence-based physical therapy rehabilitation protocols to guide injury and recovery.
