Fighting the Opioid Crisis

In 2017, more than 450 people died of overdoses in St. Louis. Motivated by a personal tragedy, Aaron Laxton, a recent Master of Social Work graduate, is working to fight the opioid crisis by advocating for needle exchange programs.

 

He has spent the last year advocating for the Safe Syringe Access bill, state legislation that would provide legal protection to health care workers workers involved with clean needle exchanges. Laxton co-founded the Missouri Safe Project: Needle Exchange with the goal of ending new IV-related HIV and Hepatitis C infections in Missouri.
