Community Engagement and Professional Development as Cornerstones of the Student Association for Public Health

For Masters of Public Health students at Saint Louis University (SLU) looking to get to know their classmates on a first-name basis and get involved in the St. Louis community, becoming a member of the Student Association for Public Health (SAPH) might be the answer.

SAPH is a student-led organization that aims to cultivate community, promote service, and support professional development for graduate students. With a focus on the needs and interests of students within the College of Public Health and Social Justice (CPHSJ), SAPH holds events including fireside chats that facilitate casual conversations between students and public health professionals or faculty members. The organization also prepares and serves meals at the nearby Ronald McDonald House, and the annual “Friends-giving” that allows students from the college to gather and bring a dish to de-stress before finals, play games, and give those who may not be able to travel home for the holidays a chance to celebrate in community.

SAPH leaders envision the club helping students in finding their smaller community within the larger university.

“I joined SAPH my first year because I was new to the area and didn’t know anyone yet. I wanted to connect with my fellow students, make friends, and get more involved to avoid the mental health challenges that come with moving away from home”, said SAPH Service Chair and second year MPH student, Genevieve Edwards.

For students looking to get involved in SAPH, reach out to members of the Executive Board by emailing saph.officers@gmail.com, or following them on Instagram @saph.slu
