Specialty Programs

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition provides a diverse range of specialty programs.

These programs equip our faculty, staff, fellows and trainees with unique opportunities to deliver patient care and gain valuable experience in the pediatric gastroenterology field. This hands-on experience fosters growth and expertise, enhancing our commitment to excellence in pediatric health care.

Bariatric and 'Healthy First' Program

The division is one of only a few hospitals in the country that offer a comprehensive weight management program. Researchers in the division are investigating the factors that influence overeating and obesity in children. For the treatment of childhood obesity, the dedicated "Healthy First" weight management program includes diet and nutrition counseling, medical management, and the option of adolescent bariatric surgery for teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 21.

We house a Level 1 Surgery Center (American College of Surgeons) and our team includes some of the most experienced surgeons and clinicians in the region.

IMAGINE Clinic

The IMAGINE Clinic (Integrative Medicine Addressing Gastro-Intestinal Needs with Evidence) offers a holistic approach to pediatric gut health, led by a pediatric gastroenterologist with expertise in integrative medicine and pediatric psychology. We provide comprehensive care that includes psychology, nutrition guidance, and a blend of conventional and complementary therapies such as herbal remedies. Our focus is on the child’s overall well-being, incorporating social and mental health aspects into long-term dietary and lifestyle changes.

We offer detailed one-hour consultations, combining conventional medicine with innovative therapies and pride ourselves on evidence-based practices.

Recognized for our work, we've been featured on Fox 2 News and Cardinal Glennon Magazine. We also offer telemedicine follow-ups and have earned top reviews from our patients. As one of only eight pediatric GI integrative programs in the country, the IMAGINE Clinic is dedicated to providing exceptional, holistic care.

LEAP Program

We have established a new program, LEAP (Leveraging Endoscopic Advancements in Pediatrics), as part of our commitment to excellence in diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy. We have designed LEAP to introduce and adapt cutting-edge techniques and technologies for the care of children who need them.

The first innovation in LEAP introduces transnasal endoscopy. This procedure reduces the need for sedation, which is particularly beneficial for patients requiring repeated endoscopies for conditions like eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), providing a safer and more comfortable experience while maintaining diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic efficacy. Supported by our skilled endoscopy staff and GI nurses, LEAP represents a significant step forward in pediatric endoscopy, prioritizing patient safety and enhancing patient care and outcomes. It heralds a brighter future for our young patients and their families.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis Program

We remain dedicated to providing comprehensive care and cutting-edge treatment for individuals affected by this complex and often misunderstood condition. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an allergic-inflammatory condition of the esophagus characterized by the accumulation of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, which can lead to significant discomfort and impairment of esophageal function.

Our program is designed to offer a holistic approach to managing EoE, integrating the latest advancements in medical research with treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs. We focus on a multi-disciplinary approach that includes gastroenterologists, allergists and dietitians ensuring that every aspect of the patient's well-being is addressed.

From initial diagnosis and cutting-edge diagnostic procedures to innovative treatment options and ongoing support, our goal is to empower patients with the knowledge and tools they need to effectively manage their condition. Our team is committed to improving quality of life through compassionate care, patient education and continual research efforts aimed at enhancing our understanding and treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis.
Our EoE multidisciplinary program was recently expanded with the introduction of the regions only transnasal endoscopy (TNE) service.

Pancreatic Diseases

The division houses an active multispecialty program to address pancreatic diseases. Our program leverages a multidisciplinary approach, combining expertise from gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, endocrinologists, dietitians, surgeons, and several other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care. Some key components include advanced diagnostic tools, individualized treatment plans, and patient education on managing lifestyle factors that impact pancreatic health. By focusing on both preventive measures and innovative treatments, our pancreas program aims to improve patient outcomes, enhance quality of life, and advance research in pancreatic diseases.

Aerodigestive Program

In the field of pediatric care, the complexities of managing conditions that affect both the respiratory and digestive systems have necessitated the development of specialized approaches. The aerodigestive program is an innovative and multidisciplinary initiative designed to address these challenges by providing comprehensive, integrated care for patients with disorders affecting the aerodigestive tract.

The aerodigestive tract encompasses the airway and digestive structures, including the lungs, esophagus, throat, and related organs. Disorders within this system can range from congenital anomalies and chronic conditions to acute diseases. Given the interconnected nature of these systems, a holistic approach is essential for effective diagnosis, treatment, and management.

Our aerodigestive program stands at the forefront of this approach, bringing together experts from various fields including gastroenterology, pulmonology, and otolaryngology. This collaborative effort ensures that patients receive a thorough evaluation and a coordinated treatment plan tailored to their unique needs.

The program focuses on both common and complex conditions, such as asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and swallowing disorders. By integrating cutting-edge diagnostic technologies with advanced treatment modalities, we strive to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Our commitment extends beyond medical treatment; we also emphasize patient education, support, and ongoing care to empower individuals to manage their health effectively. Through a combination of innovative research, compassionate care, and interdisciplinary teamwork, the aerodigestive program is dedicated to advancing the field and offering hope to those affected by aerodigestive conditions.

Welcome to a new era of integrated care, where expertise, innovation, and compassion converge to address the complexities of the aerodigestive tract. It additionally leverages our strengths from the LEAP, neurogastroenterology and IMAGINE programs.

Celiac Disease

We welcome patients and families to our comprehensive celiac disease program, where our mission is to empower individuals with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to manage celiac disease effectively. Celiac disease remains a serious condition triggered by the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It can cause a range of symptoms from digestive distress to neurological issues, and managing it requires a thorough understanding of how to navigate daily life without gluten.

Our program is designed to offer comprehensive support for those affected by celiac disease, including personalized dietary guidance, educational workshops, and access to healthcare professionals who specialize in this condition. We are dedicated to providing up-to-date information on the latest research, treatment options, and gluten-free products. Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been living with celiac disease for years, our program aims to enhance your quality of life through expert advice, community support, and practical tools for managing your health.

Join us on this journey towards better health and a more informed approach to living gluten-free. Together, we can make managing celiac disease easier and more manageable. The brings together resources from the NOURISH program that she leads.
