Interventional Radiology Residency

The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Interventional Radiology Residency Program provides training in diagnostic radiology and advanced, image-guided interventions. The five-year program is available to trainees who have completed a yearlong clinical internships.

A Message From the Program Director

Welcome to the Interventional Radiology Residency Program. As program director, I'm proud to share what makes our program a hidden gem.

In your first year, you'll complete three full months of IR rotations and begin taking IR calls — a level of early immersion that is rare among programs nationwide. The entirety of your training will help you experience the full spectrum of IR, from interventions at Level 1 trauma centers to complex oncology, the venous system, pediatrics and veterans' care.

Equally important, our program emphasizes the clinical side of IR. You'll work in outpatient clinics, manage consult-based services, run wound care clinics, and guide patients through every stage of care.

Beyond clinical training, you'll have support, resources and mentorship to pursue projects in quality improvement, education and clinical research.

We are looking for residents who are eager to learn, value clinical experience and want to grow as both a physician and person.

Thank you for your interest. I look forward to meeting the next generation of interventional radiologists who will help shape the future of our field.

Program Highlights

The five-year, ACGME-accredited interventional radiology program embodies the vision of Charles Dotter, M.D.: train interventionalists as clinicians first and technicians second. Residents don't just learn procedures; they develop clinical judgment, autonomy and confidence to thrive as future leaders in the field.

Training includes advanced procedures such as critical limb ischemia interventions, pulmonary embolism thrombectomy, and other complex endovascular therapies. This IR-driven model ensures residents gain unparalleled, hands-on experience and full clinical ownership while learning in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

  • High-volume tertiary care setting
  • Integrated and independent tracks
  • Early IR exposure
  • Early autonomy and supervised responsibility
  • Personalized teaching and mentorship
  • Protected study time and research opportunities
  • Optional internal moonlighting
  • Tight-knit community
