General Surgery Residency

The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine General Surgery Residency Program produces well-rounded, broadly trained general surgeons prepared for fellowship training, academic surgery or private practice.

Program Highlights

The five-year, ACGME-accredited general surgery residency produces board-certified general surgeons who are compassionate, clinically excellent, technically adept and prepared for their chosen careers. Experiences range from academic tertiary care to private practice, exposing residents to a broad array of practice styles and skills in general, pediatric, vascular, gastrointestinal and cardiothoracic surgeries.

A weekly didactic curriculum, supplementary journal clubs, clinical research opportunities and a variety of activities outside the hospital allow for a balanced residency experience.

  • High acuity patient population
  • Diverse training sites
  • 380-plus operative cases within the first two years of training
  • 1,000-plus operative cases upon graduation
  • Matches into competitive fellowship programs
