Saint Louis University’s Master of Arts program in Spanish offers a holistic and diversified approach to the study of the language, culture and literature. Students gain a solid, up-to-date background in Spanish studies and broaden their perspective within specific areas of interest.

About the Program

SLU’s M.A. in Spanish is suited to those planning or already engaged in professional careers such as teaching or international affairs. The Spanish program also has a record of providing excellent preparation for those who continue on to doctoral studies.

SLU - Madrid

Spanish courses are offered year-round at our St. Louis campus as well as at our campus in Madrid, Spain. Students may fulfill all or part of the program requirements on either campus. Saint Louis University's Madrid campus, the first fully accredited U.S. university recognized by Spanish higher education authorities, has been educating students for nearly 50 years. It is guided by the same Jesuit ideals and traditions as the St. Louis campus.

Program Highlights

SLU’s master degree in Spanish exists on two campuses: our campus in Saint Louis and our campus in Madrid, Spain. Courses are offered year-round on both campuses. Typically one graduate-level course is offered during the summer in St. Louis, while more are offered during the summer in Madrid, giving students the opportunity to develop an even stronger linguistic proficiency through total immersion in the Spanish language. Students may fulfill all or part of the program requirements on either campus.

Curriculum and Program Details

Degree requirements for a master’s in Spanish at SLU include 30 credit hours of coursework, a final written examination and a final oral examination. Course offerings include Peninsular and Latin American literature, Afro Hispanic literature, film, art, women writers, linguistics and teaching methodologies.

Many full-time master’s students in Spanish at SLU receive financial support through teaching assistantships or research assistantships. Qualified students may also apply for a one-semester research assistantship in Madrid, Spain.
