Internal Medicine Residency Application Process

The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program has 29 categorical (three-year) positions and six to seven preliminary positions. Four of the preliminary spots will automatically be filled by newly matched ophthalmology residents.

The program participates exclusively in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

  • Categorical NRMP Code: 1365140C0
  • Preliminary NRMP Code: 1365140P0
  • International Requirements: Must be a recent medical graduate (within the past five years) and ECFMG-certified. At least six months of U.S. clinical experience is preferred. The program sponsors J-1 visas and discretionary H-1B training visas (requires USMLE Step 3). Email gme@slucare.ssmhealth.com for more information.

Applicant Review

Applicants are reviewed holistically, with selections based on geographic location, program signals (strongly encouraged) and connection to the University. Program leaders look closely for evidence of character and growth, specifically evaluating:

  • Resilience: Did an applicant with a low or failing USMLE or COMLEX score experience an unfortunate circumstance or demonstrate lessons learned?
  • Mission Alignment: Is an applicant committed to an aspect of the University's Catholic, Jesuit mission, such as service, leadership or advocacy?
  • Clinical Growth: How has an applicant’s clinical clerkship helped define their approach to patient communication and rapport?
  • Readiness: Is the applicant available and prepared to begin training in July of the Match year?

Scoring

The selection committee uses a values-based scoring algorithm that prioritizes:

  • Medical school performance
  • Commitment to mission
  • Leadership potential
  • Service

Applicants’ scores determine whether they will be invited to an interview. If there is a tie score, preference is given to applicants who signaled the program.

Virtual Interviews

All interviews will be conducted virtually via the Thalamus platform. Interviews are designed to be low-key and informal, ensuring candidates and program leaders get to know one another.

  • Mid-October: Interview invitations are extended.
  • Mid-December: Formal interview sessions begin.

Rank List

Candidate positions on the program’s rank order list are determined through a comprehensive, multi-factor evaluation based on the following components:

  • Composite interview score calculated from evaluations by the two faculty members and two residents in the interview (Note: The program director does not score interviews.)
  • Pre-interview application score
  • Program signal status
  • Overall impression made during the interview

Once the initial draft rank list is complete, the leadership team and residents meet for additional review and refinement. The final list is typically finalized and submitted at the end of January.
