Internal Medicine Residency Program Tracks

Internal medicine residents can pursue specialized training that aligns with their specific interests and career goals. 

Primary Care Track

The primary care track offers additional clinic-based experiences and training for residents pursuing careers in primary care and academic general internal medicine. They develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to lead multidisciplinary health care teams in primary care, balancing individual clinical excellence with population-wide health outcomes. 

Each year, residents on this track will have a three-month ambulatory block, during which they'll focus on quality improvement, teaching and multidisciplinary teamwork.

  • Manage patients across multiple outpatient settings
  • Gain clinic experience in the following specialities:
    • Endocrinology
    • Gynecology
    • Sports medicine
    • Weight-metabolism
    • Dermatology

Application Process

Hospital Medicine Track

The hospital medicine track is ideal for residents pursuing careers in academic internal medicine, hospital medicine and/or quality improvement. During their second and third year, residents on this track participate in a series of activities that help them leverage their roles as educators, healers and researchers to lead patient-focused multidisciplinary teams.

  • Develop and implement a year-long quality improvement project
  • Complete a month-long capstone rotation as an independent provider
  • Receive clinical coaching and mentorship

Application Process

Applicants must be in their first or second year of residency and submit a CV along with a 350- to 500-word letter of intent outlining their interest and goals.

PROMOTE

PROMOTE is a resident-led leadership track that provides opportunities for near-peer teaching, curriculum innovation, faculty mentorship and scholarly publication. Residents who complete the training will be awarded a medical education leadership distinction at graduation.
