Alumni Awards

After graduation, Saint Louis University alumni head out into the world to make a difference — in their fields, in their communities and in the lives of others. SLU is pleased to honor their achievements with a variety of awards.

Alumni Merit Awards

Alumni Merit Awards are given to distinguished graduates from 12 of SLU’s schools, colleges and degree-granting centers in recognition of their outstanding achievement, dedication to a chosen profession and commitment to the mission of the University.

Alumni are welcome to nominate their fellow SLU graduates for the awards. The National Alumni Board, Division of Development, academic leadership and faculty select the winners. Recipients are honored at an annual award ceremony held the week of commencement.

Review the award criteria and learn how to nominate a SLU graduate for an Alumni Merit Award now.

Pioneer Award

As the first institution of higher learning west of the Mississippi River, Saint Louis University was founded and operated to educate pioneers who helped shape the history of our region and nation. In honor of this enterprising spirit, SLU's Pioneer Award annually recognizes a graduate who is driven, hardworking, innovative and committed to Jesuit ideals, and whose actions and accomplishments have helped pave the way for others. The recipient of this award is honored at an annual ceremony held commencement week.

Review the award criteria and learn how to nominate a SLU graduate for a Pioneer Award.

Past Pioneer Award Recipients

2023

William L. Clay, Sr.
College of Arts and Sciences, Class of 1953

For more than 60 years, retired Congressman William L. Clay, Sr., has advocated for the underserved. He once said, “I have no intention of representing those powerful interests who walk over powerless people.”

After earning his degree from SLU, the native St. Louisan was drafted by the Army, where he worked to end segregation on military bases. He also helped organize anti-discrimination picket lines at restaurants, banks and grocery stores, for which he was jailed more than once.

Hoping to push for more significant change, Clay served as a St. Louis alderman for five years, and in 1968, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was the first Black person elected to represent Missouri in Congress and served for 32 years. Known for his zealous and sometimes fiery approach to discourse, Clay sponsored or cosponsored nearly 300 bills that were signed into law, including the Family Medical Leave Act, measures to raise the minimum wage and student loan forgiveness for teachers who worked in inner-city schools.

Parks, university buildings, a street and housing complexes are named in his honor. In 2013, the Poplar Street Bridge connecting St. Louis to East St. Louis, Illinois, was renamed the William L. Clay Bridge. Clay’s awards and honors number in the dozens. He holds 13 honorary degrees and has been given the keys to three cities. Clay said his greatest legacy is the William L. Clay Scholarship and Research Fund that prepares students for college. Thus far, the fund has generated more than $2 million to educate young adults who will pick up where he left off. Clay and his wife, Carol Ann, reside in Silver Spring, Maryland.

2022

Cecilia A. Nadal, M.A.
College of Arts and Sciences, Class of 1972

Cecilia Nadal has committed her life to shining a light of hope, peace and acceptance on society’s most vulnerable, using cross-cultural engagement strategies through music, dance, drama and education.

Nadal founded Gitana Productions, a nonprofit arts and education organization, in 1996. She has produced more than 25 major international music/dance shows, more than 20 original plays, the first major cross-cultural engagement conference in St. Louis and numerous educational events to promote peace and connection across cultures. She started Global Education Through the Arts, the first community arts program in Missouri, bringing together African American and refugee and immigrant youth in South City, Ferguson and the Amherst Park area.

After the Ferguson protests, Nadal felt compelled to explore the complex issues between the police and the community. She collaborated with playwright Lee Patton Chiles, to develop the highly successful play Black and Blue and other plays such as Complacency of Silence: Darfur; My Heart is Always Shaking: Afghan Women Refugees in St. Louis.

Nadal has written two plays: Between Worlds: An American Tragedy and An Amazing Story: German Abolitionists of Missouri. The latter play and community engagement would result in the city of Hermann, Missouri, celebrating Black History Month for the first time.

2017

Dr. Stanley L. Anderson, Kansas City, Missouri
College of Arts and Sciences, Class of 1991
College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School, Class of 1996
School of Medicine, Class of 2001

One of the Kansas City region’s only African-American male OB-GYN physicians, Dr. Anderson was one of his area’s first da Vinci robotic surgeons. In 2014, he simultaneously chaired the OB-GYN department at HCA Research Medical Center and served patients in two other offices. Dr. Anderson also was a preceptor instructor of future doctors for Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. To encourage other low-income students majoring in a health science field to attend college, Dr. Anderson began the Drs. Stanley and Tiffany Anderson Scholarship Fund at the Topeka Community Foundation in Topeka, Kansas. He passed away in August 2017 after battling cancer.
