Careers

Graduates in mathematics and statistics are versatile. They enter many career paths, including business, industry, medicine, government, and college teaching. Many also pursue an MBA or other advanced degree.

Career Services Center

The primary resource for SLU students and Alumni is the university's Career Services office. They offer a variety of services including one-on-one counseling, resume reviews, and mock interviews to get prepared to apply for internships and full-time employment upon graduation.  They also organize two large on-campus career fairs each year (one in the Fall and one in the Spring), and host a variety of companies who do on-campus interviews to recruit SLU students.

The Career Service office maintains an online listing of internship and full-time employment opportunities known as the Handshake system. Students can access that from the preceding link or by clicking on the Handshake tool once logged into the SLU student portal. Once logged in, it is also possible to do searches based upon desired majors that employors identify or geographic regions.

Careers in Mathematics and Statistics

The jobs rating website CareerCast consistently ranks careers built on Mathematics and Statistics at the top of its lists.

Students with mathematics and statistics degrees are attractive to professional graduate schools in law, medicine, and business because they value analytical skills and the ability to work in a problem solving environment.  Their entrance tests are designed to find these skills, so math and statistics students tend to score well.

Our Graduates

Many graduates choose to continue their education in graduate school.  Some earn masters or Ph.D. degrees in mathematics. Our students have gone on to earn these degrees at Saint Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis, Columbia, Yale, Berkeley, University of Illinois, University of Iowa, and University of Virginia among others.

A degree in mathematics or statistics makes an excellent complement to graduate education in business, medicine, health care, and law, and many of our graduates have continued into these professional careers.

Degrees from the department lead to careers in education, business and industry. Some of the industry and government employers where our graduates have found success:
