Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship
The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program prepares physicians to be well-rounded gastroenterologists who have strong clinical, procedural and research skills, and can meet modern-day needs.
A Message From the Program Director
Welcome to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program.
Our program equips fellows with the expertise needed to address the evolving demands of gastroenterology through patient-centered, team-based care. It emphasizes training in inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, research and working with a diverse patient population.
The program — which includes a dual-pathway training option — is also dynamically shaped by the interests of each fellow. Our talented faculty and robust resources further enhance our mission to provide high-quality training and excellent care for the community.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Program Overview
The three-year, ACGME-accredited gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship provides training in the cognitive and procedural aspects of the field, including gastrointestinal endoscopy and liver biopsies. First-year fellows become proficient in basic endoscopic procedures, while second- and third-year fellows gain advanced expertise and have increased clinical responsibilities.
Fellows rotate through the following sites:
Fellows have mentored, laboratory-based and clinical research opportunities that prepare them for a career in academic medicine. They engage in all aspects of research and learn the skills necessary to win peer-reviewed funding in the current competitive climate. They also have access to research assistants, data analysis tools and audio/visual support for presentations.
Notably, fellows can take advantage of the dual-pathway training option, through which they'll be board-eligible in both gastroenterology and transplant hepatology in three years, rather than four. It offers additional transplant hepatology-specific experiences in pathology, liver biopsies, liver procurement, and outpatient rotations with transplant surgery and pediatrics.
