Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship

The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program offers a one-year immersive experience into the full spectrum of academic and community transfusion practice.  

Program Overview

The one-year, ACGME-accredited blood banking and transfusion medicine fellowship provides broad-based expertise in both academic and community transfusion medicine. Graduates are qualified to be medical directors in any transfusion medicine setting.  

Fellows train at the following sites: 

Clinical Training
  • SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital (Nine Total Months):  
    • Level I Trauma Center: high-complexity medical care, including transplantation and subspecialized surgery 
    • Apheresis Service (Six Months): therapeutic procedures, peripheral blood progenitor cell collection, outpatient transfusions, therapeutic phlebotomy 
    • HLA Lab (One Month): molecular and serological evaluations 
    • Cell Therapy (One Month): laboratory and clinical integration 
    • Dedicated Research (One Month): 100% protected time 
  • SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – St. Louis (One Month):  
    • Specialized Care: focus on high-risk pregnancy care and fetal surgery 
    • Perinatal Focus: robust experience in perinatal transfusion medicine 
    • Hybrid Environment: community hospital orientation with university teaching mission 
  • SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital (One Month):  
    • Full Range of Services: includes Level I trauma center and Level IV NICU 
    • Comprehensive Scope: education in neonatal and pediatric transfusion medicine 
  • ImpactLIfe (One Month): 
    • Operations: experience in medical, operational and regulatory aspects of blood collection 
    • Advanced Testing: high-complexity infectious disease testing and referred serological evaluations

The fellowship program offers one position each year. 

Applicants must be board certified or board eligible in clinical pathology, anatomic pathology/clinical pathology, hematology or another relevant speciality.
