Hematopathology Fellowship

The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Hematopathology Fellowship Program offers a one-year, ACGME-accredited apprenticeship designed to develop junior staff into sophisticated experts in the management of neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematopathology.  

A Message From the Program Director

It is my privilege to welcome you to learn about the Hematopathology Fellowship Program at SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Our vision is to foster a culture where s fellow can reach his/her highest potential and develop into an expert hematopathologist.

Each year we sign out approximately1800 flow cytometry cases, 550 bone marrows, 200 lymph nodes and other tissue biopsies, and 750 consults (including de novo workups of bone marrows and lymph nodes from pathology departments within the healthcare system).

Completion of this one-year, ACGME-accredited program fulfills the requirements for board certification in hematopathology. Our faculty enthusiastically share their expertise through sign-out sessions, teaching conferences and career planning. Research projects are available.

Program Overview

The one-year, ACGME-accredited hematopathology fellowship at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine is an apprenticeship in academic hematopathology. As a junior member of the hematopathology staff, the trainee develops technical, managerial, consultative, diagnostic and scientific skills while mastering all aspects of the field.  

Each fellow will master the correlation of the cytomorphological and histologic findings with clinical presentation and ancillary laboratory findings, including: 

  • Flow cytometry  
  • Immunohistochemistry 
  • Molecular and cytogenetic diagnostics 

Approximately eight weeks will be assigned to elective time to cover wet hematology, performance of bone marrow procedures, coagulation and laboratory management.

The fellowship program offers one position each year. 

Candidates must have completed an accredited residency in anatomic pathology or anatomic pathology/clinical pathology and must be able to apply successfully for Missouri state medical licensure.
