Department of Pathology
Saint Louis University School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology blends clinical care with genetic, molecular and cellular research to transform how we diagnose and treat disease.
A Message From the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Pathology. We deliver patient-centered diagnostic services, exceptional education and innovative research across SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – St. Louis, as well as four community hospitals in the region.
We offer a full range of reference laboratory services, including:
- Autopsy: adult, pediatric and perinatal
- Specialized Pathology: placental and dementia-related brain pathology
- Diagnostics: cytopathology, flow cytometry and toxicology
- Technical Services: renal services, electron microscopy and histology (immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and histochemistry)
Our commitment to academic medicine is reflected in our fellowship programs. Training is available in forensic pathology, GI/liver pathology, hematopathology, pediatric pathology and transfusion medicine.
Research is also central to our mission. Our faculty and medical trainees are involved in projects ranging from the study of natural killer cell function and tumor suppression to active participation in national liver pathology study groups.
Through all these endeavors, we are guided by the Jesuit traditions of cura personalis — care for the whole person — and being men and women for and with others.
Thank you for your interest in our work.

Govind Bhagat, M.B.B.S.
