Harold Braswell, Ph.D., and Paul Lynch, Ph.D., are the inaugural winners of the University Core's 2023 Ignite Instructor of the Year Award. Braswell, associate professor in the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics, was recognized for his spring 2023 seminar, "Life: A User's Manual." Lynch, an associate professor of English, was the fall 2023 winner for his seminar, "Writing as a Way of Life." _____________________________

Harold Braswell, Ph.D., M.S.W. won a $250,000 grant from the Teagle Foundation to create an educational program on SLU's campus designed to promote the humanities to STEM students through the teaching of "transformative texts": primary source works that explore life's most profound questions. The name of the program will be "Confluence," and as of September 15, they are still recruiting students and instructors who are interested in participating.

For decades now, there has been debate in academic literature about the ethical principles that govern medical decision-making for children. In response to this, a group of leading scholars in pediatric ethics participated in a June 2022 symposium, “Best Interests and Beyond: Standards of Decision Making in Pediatrics,” at Saint Louis University. Over the course of three days, the 17 scholars debated one question – in the context of U.S. pediatric care, what moral precepts ought to guide parents and clinicians in medical decision-making for children? The symposium and further discussions led to six recommendations for pediatric decision-making. Those findings, “Pediatric Decision Making: Consensus Recommendations,” appeared in Pediatrics on Aug. 9. Erica K. Salter, Ph.D., HEC-C associate professor of health care ethics and pediatrics at Saint Louis University for the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics, is the paper’s lead author.

Yolonda Y. Wilson, Ph.D. (Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics) was quoted in the article, "Artificial intelligence and medicine: Mounting risks amid the promise." The article can be found in the ACS Journal: Cancer Cytopathology (Volume 131, Issue 7 - Jul 2023).
