Master of Accounting Requirements

The Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business, with its continuing mission to provide excellence in business education, has developed a program to help students develop strong ethical, technical and professional accounting skills, and provides in-depth expertise in general accounting, taxation and auditing.

While all students will complete a core of required courses that will prepare them for a career in accounting and the CPA examination, the graduate accounting programs offer distinct areas of emphasis which allow students to further their knowledge in a specific discipline of accounting. Students will achieve an area of emphasis if they complete at least three elective courses in one of the three areas offered: audit, taxation or financial reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

One-Year MBA

What is the advantage of the one-year MBA?

The intensive nature of SLU’s one-year MBA program encourages thinking across disciplines and learning by immersion, so students graduate with a thorough understanding of the business world. Each cohort is comprised of students from diverse educational backgrounds and experiences. Additionally, the program can be completed in less than one calendar year in nearly half the time (and cost) of a traditional two-year full-time MBA program.

What distinguishes SLU’s program from other one-year programs?

Saint Louis University offers the only AACSB-accredited one-year MBA program in the region. Fewer than five percent of business schools worldwide are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Ethics in business has been embedded in SLU’s business curriculum from the beginning, as Jesuit tradition demands excellence in research, teaching and service to humanity. The University’s mission requires that we honor human dignity as we promote the common good by becoming men and women for others in everything we do.

What is the international component to the one-year MBA?

Between the fall and spring semesters, students study abroad in Hong Kong to gain valuable hands-on international business experience in fields such as marketing and finance.

When does the next one-year MBA class start?

The next cohort will begin in the summer of 2018.

When does the one-year MBA application process begin?

Applications are currently being accepted. The deadline is May 15, 2018.

Professional MBA

Who is the ideal candidate for SLU’s Professional MBA program?

Our ideal candidate is a working professional who values a quality AACSB-accredited graduate business education with at least two years of post-bachelor degree full-time work experience.

How is ethics in business a part of SLU’s coursework?

Ethics in business has been embedded in SLU’s business curriculum from the beginning, as Jesuit tradition demands excellence in research, teaching and service to humanity. The University’s mission requires that we honor human dignity as we promote the common good by becoming men and women for others in everything we do.

Is a business major required for admission consideration?

No. Non-business majors are eligible for admission consideration. The committee will review the quantitative academic background and the quantitative percentile of the GMAT.

Are there prerequisites before beginning SLU’s Professional MBA program?

No. For those who recently graduated with a business major, they are eligible for a waiver consideration of prerequisites.

Do Professional MBA students only work on a cohort basis?

No. SLU MBA students are provided many opportunities to interact with all students in the Chaifetz School. Current students and alumni value this optimized opportunity for networking with diverse business professionals.

What if I have an opportunity for career advancement in another city and I am halfway through my program? Will more than six credits transfer?

Yes. Our Professional MBA program participates in the MBA Multilateral Agreement. Because of this unique agreement among select Jesuit schools across the country, it is possible that more graduate credits from SLU will transfer if you relocate to another region of the country.

This agreement provides students with an unparalleled flexibility to transfer as many graduate credits as possible to complete their MBA degree at another participating Jesuit or Catholic university. The majority of Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States, along with three Catholic, non-Jesuit universities, participate in the Jesuit MBA Multilateral Agreement. Participating students are required to meet the admission requirements of the school to which they wish to transfer. More information and a list of participating schools are available at jesuitmba.org.

Who are some of the employers students work for while pursuing their SLU MBA?

Recent employers have included Ameren, Anheuser Busch InBev, Boeing, Caleres, Edward Jones, Emerson, Energizer, Ernst and Young, Fleishman-Hillard, Monsanto, Nestle Purina, Novus International, Inc., Peabody Energy, Saint Louis University Hospital, Scottrade, United States Air Force and World Wide Technology.

If my company offers tuition reimbursement, how would I pay for my classes?

SLU offers a deferred payment option. Students are asked to complete the online form for the specific term to be enrolled in the deferred payment option if your employer offers a tuition reimbursement program.

Are scholarships available?

Yes, scholarships are available and can be awarded twice a year. Awards are granted up to the complete cost of one class ( or 3 credit hours). Students who receive limited education benefits from their employer are especially encouraged to apply. A separate application and essay are required for consideration.
