Quantum Research
Quantum science explores the smallest pieces of our universe, but the quantum research being performed at the Saint Louis University School of Science and Engineering is aiming for big impacts.
As the investment in quantum science increases globally, organizations across sectors are preparing for a future shaped by these transformative technologies. At SLU's School of Science and Engineering, we're meeting this challenge with faculty who are leaders in the field and innovative research spaces designed to prepare the next generation of quantum leaders.
We have assembled an exceptional team with the expertise needed to establish a strong quantum ecosystem at SLU. Our goal is to create a collaborative environment where researchers, educators and students work together to advance discovery and position SLU as a recognized leader in the quantum landscape.

Exploring the Potential of Light
In understanding the basis of our world, researchers are unlocking the potential of new materials and devices, including in KLab Photonics, a lab led by associate professor Nate Kinsey, Ph.D. The lab focuses on controlling the extremes of light from high-power pulses to single photons - at nanoscale dimensions, seeking to study the basic properties and interactions of new materials to improve both classical and quantum applications.
One area of interest is the emerging field of time-varying interactions. What happens to light when it hits time-varying materials? An entirely new dimension of control is opened. Researchers are exploring these interactions down to the femtosecond, with the goal of converting the color of photons and quantum states for quantum communications and sensing.
