Summer Session 2021 Guidance

The following University guidance is based upon clear direction from the St. Louis City Department of Health. As such, this guidance is unique to Saint Louis University. It may be revised at any time.

This guidance applies only to in-person and on-campus summer programs, including:

  • Classes
  • Teaching labs
  • Trainings
  • Camps
  • Athletic events outside the purview of the NCAA

This guidance provides direction for those summer program leaders and teaching faculty who choose to embrace the more liberating CDC (adopted 5-13-21) and city (adopted 5-14-21) public health guidances. We do not require you to change your planned summer course modalities to accommodate these more lenient public health protocols. If you had planned for online instruction, feel free to remain online. That is your choice.

All vaccinated persons attending any summer program affected by this guidance are free to participate without wearing a face mask and without being 6 feet apart from one another.

See COVID-Prevention Guidance When Out and About on Our St. Louis Campuses

Finally, please do not project this guidance to be the COVID-19-prevention measures we may utilize for the upcoming fall semester.

Who Does This Guidance Affect?

This guidance for on-campus, in-person summer programs covers:

  • All University students, faculty and staff who participate in University sponsored classes, teaching labs, trainings, camps and athletic events outside NCAA auspices.
  • All non-University persons who participate in any way in University sponsored classes, teaching labs, trainings, camps and athletic events outside NCAA auspices.
  • All persons who participate in any way in non-University sponsored classes, teaching labs, trainings, camps and athletic events outside NCAA auspices.
  • All persons who manage and staff events in Chaifetz Arena.

Exception: This guidance does not apply to fans and audience members attending Chaifetz Arena events or indoor NCAA athletic events. It does not apply to team members participating in indoor NCAA events. Separate guidances will be issued for those circumstances.

Guidance for Summer Programs

Indoors: Passing the 70% Vaccination Test

If 70% or more of the combined total of students, faculty and staff in your section or program attest to being fully vaccinated:

  • All persons, regardless of vaccination status, are free to participate without wearing their face mask, and without being 6 feet apart from one another.
  • Of course, any participant is free to wear a face mask if they prefer.
  • No faculty, staff or student can require participants to wear their face masks.
  • Exception: Unvaccinated persons must wear face masks when performing these indoor activities:
    • Singing.
    • High-intensity exercise.
  • Symptom checks using #CampusClear must have been conducted by each participant prior to the start of each session — regardless of vaccination status. Participants are not required to show the #CampusClear “Good to go” screen. They are to abide by the honor system. However, entrance to any summer program held in the Simon Recreation Center or Pius XII Memorial Library requires the #CampusClear “Good to go” screen.
  • Anyone with a COVID-19-like symptom must leave the building and contact Student Health, Employee Health or their own personal physician. It is possible for some vaccinated persons to be COVID-positive and spread the disease to others.

Cleaning and disinfecting of indoor equipment, furnishings and commonly-touched surfaces of any kind may be conducted once per day.

Indoors: Failing or Voluntarily Not Adopting the 70% Vaccination Test

If less than 70% of the combined total of students, faculty and staff in your section or program attest to being fully vaccinated, or if any summer program leaders and teaching faculty prefer not to utilize the 70% vaccination test.

  • All unvaccinated persons must wear their face mask.
  • All vaccinated persons are free to participate without wearing their face mask.
  • Of course, any vaccinated person is free to wear a face mask if they prefer.
  • All vaccinated and unvaccinated participants must:
    • Be 6 feet apart from one another.
    • Check for COVID-19-like symptoms using #CampusClear prior to the start of each session. Participants are not required to show the #CampusClear “Good to go” screen. They are to abide by the honor system. However, entrance to any Summer program held in the Simon Recreation Center or Pius XII Memorial Library requires the #CampusClear “Good to go” screen.
  • Anyone with COVID-19-like symptoms must exit the building and immediately report their symptoms to the Student Health Center, Employee Health or their personal physician. It is possible for some vaccinated persons to be COVID-19-positive and spread the disease to others.
  • No faculty, staff or student can require any vaccinated participant to wear their face mask.

Cleaning and disinfecting of indoor equipment, furnishings and commonly-touched surfaces of any kind may be conducted once per day.
