Course Description

This hands-on course is intended for providers who work with school-age youth in clinical settings. In this course participants will: (1) Integrate the practice of yoga and mindfulness as a resource for youth in developing skills in emotional regulation, concentration, stress relief and self-care; (2) Use mindfulness practices for their own self-care; and (3) Examine how mindfulness practices encourage cultural humility and support racial equity work. Through techniques that offer opportunities for self-observation and reflection, we come to understand biases and cultural assumptions that may influence our behaviors and create the space to re-learn and move toward intentional actions.

Participation in this course may allow for the opportunity to engage in follow-up mentorship sessions in which participants will meet with a mentor in August and October to receive guidance and feedback on the implementation of a plan for integrating yoga and mindfulness practices into their clinical work.

The mission of The Oxygen Project: Yoga for Youth, a 501c3 non-profit organization in St. Louis, is to empower youth to face everyday stress and significant life challenges with resilience and calm through yoga and mindfulness techniques. We offer school-age youth, and the adults who work with them, the powerful tools of yoga and mindfulness through ongoing classes held at schools and youth organizations. Learning Objectives

1. Identify how trauma and chronic stress affect youth behavior and development and the contributions of yoga and mindfulness techniques toward mental wellness.

2. Implement yoga & mindfulness techniques into direct work with youth in a trauma-sensitive way.

3. Apply mindfulness practice, observation and reflection on personal beliefs and biases, and identify opportunities for change.

4. Create a plan for utilizing yoga and mindfulness practices as resources for self-care in taking care of others.
